Hair Transplant FAQs
In organ transplant, normally the donor is someone else. In Hair Transplant, you are your own donor. normally follicles are not taken from other donors as patient will be required to take immunosuppressant drugs lifelong which is not advisable for cosmetic procedures.
You’ve probably noticed, especially in men, that they will lose from front, top, and crown areas of their heads. Whereas the hair on the sides and backs of their heads are not lost. The sides and back are far less affected by the action of DHT upon their hair follicles. These areas are the donor sites. Required number of hair roots are removed from these donor areas.
During your first consultation, the doctor should examine your head thoroughly and take a detailed medical history. The examination of your head should include the use of an instrument called the Hair Densitometer. This measures your hair density and allows your doctor to properly evaluate the number of hairs in each Graft. The doctor will also evaluate your hair loss pattern for future. This instrument compares fine hair to thick ones, measuring the degree of miniaturization of your hair strands caused by shrinking hair follicles, the progressive diminishing of each hair’s diameter and length. The doctor should also explain the entire hair transplant procedure, including any associated risks, and tell you what you can expect in the months following the procedure.
The front and top of your head will receive transplanted hair first, because these are the areas that frame your face and make the most impact on your appearance. The crown is usually the last area to receive hair (in later procedures), unless it’s your only balding area.
The number of procedures depends upon the extent of your hair loss, the projected hair loss rate, the amount of donor hair you can spare, and other artistic and medical considerations. Men can often have the results they’re looking for in just one or two hair transplant sessions in which thousands of hairs are transplanted in follicular units of one to four hairs each. Women need more sessions to achieve proper density. These sessions can last between five and ten hours each. Future sessions can follow if necessary.
The amount of grafts you will need ultimately depends on your degree of hair loss currently and in the future, and on how full you desire your hair to be.
Once it’s been extracted, it is transplanted to the balding parts of your scalp. The donated hair, hair follicles, surrounding tissue, and skin are called grafts, and each graft contains one or more hair follicles with accompanying hair, tissue, and skin. No two heads are alike, and you will see that the art of hair transplantation is just as important as its science or medical aspects.
Hair density is the number of hair follicles you have per square centimeter of scalp. Scalp laxity is the flexibility and looseness of your scalp. More grafts of hair can be transplanted when your density is high and the scalp laxity is high.
Number of hair roots transplanted impacts the coverage of scalp. Quality, texture and colour of the transplanted hair also affects the coverage. Number of roots per square cm also affects the coverage of scalp. Coarse hair is bulkier and can therefore be transplanted using fewer hairs per graft since it gives more coverage of the scalp. Fine hair has less bulb and can give a very natural look but less coverage than coarser hair. Wavy and curly hair lends itself to good visual results in transplantation because a single wavy or curly hair curls on itself and can therefore cover more scalp area than can a straight hair. Curly hair also rises from the scalp and holds its shape, and these factors also give the appearance of greater coverage.
The closer your hair color is to your skin color, the better the appearance of the hair’s coverage. African hair is dark and very curly and therefore provides the least contrast against various shades of dark skin, giving the best visual hair transplant results. From a visual point of view, people with dark, straight hair and a light complexion pose the most artistic challenges in hair transplantation because they have the most contrast between their hair and skin shades.
When designing your procedure, your doctor must keep in mind your future hair loss pattern and the rate of that potential hair loss. The design of your restored hairline is crucial. Natural front hairlines vary in shape and density from person to person. Your doctor will choose the recipient sites for the transplanted hair based upon an overall design that may take more than on hair transplant session to achieve. These sessions typically take place months or even years apart, depending upon the progression of your hair loss.
A typical session of between 1,500 to 3,000 grafts normally involves a 6 to 7 hours of surgery on an out-patient basis. Most patients will arrive in the morning and will have their procedure completed by late afternoon.
Patients are given local anesthesia in the donor and recipient areas. Most patients find that once the anesthesia is given, they feel no pain or discomfort during the surgery. Following surgery, patients will typically feel some amount of soreness and numbness, with some mild discomfort for which medication will be prescribed. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how minimal the discomfort from the surgical procedure is.
FUT ( follicular unit transplant) and FUE (follicular unit extraction) refers to the method of harvesting the follicles from the backside of head. In FUT, a strip of skin is removed and follicles are separated on table under direct vision by technicians whereas in FUE individual follicles are harvested from the backside of head. Method of transplanting these follicles in the bald part of head is similar in both these techniques.
With today’s very refined micro hair transplantation procedure the incisions are very small and less invasive than past procedures. This results in more rapid healing. Most patients feel fine within a day or two following surgery, although some numbness and mild soreness can be expected following surgery.
Work can be resumed within 3 to 4 days.
Hair transplantation can be so natural that even your hair stylist will not know that you’ve had it done. Transplanted hair has the same colour, characteristics, texture and growth pattern. They can be styled, shaved, ironed or curled.
Immediately following surgery a patient’s recipient area is typically pink with scabs forming around the micro incisions. These hundreds of tiny incisions will heal rapidly within a week to ten days.
During the first few days after the surgery a person’s hair transplants will be noticeable if there is no previous hair to mask these temporary scabs. you can cover it with cap. However, most patients feel comfortable being in public without wearing a hat within 5 to 7 days following surgery.
Once the transplanted hair grows out the results should look entirely natural, even under close examination.
Normally it takes between three to five months following surgery before the transplanted hair follicles begin to grow new hair. The transplanted hair grows very thin and colourless initially and gradually grows thicker and fuller over time. After one year a patient’s transplanted hair will be fully mature and will continue to grow.
Since the hair follicles that are transplanted to the balding areas are genetically resistant to going bald, they will continue to grow..
As the results are natural, most people think it as a good investment for your image and confidence. It is a one-time expenditure unlike the amount you spend repeatedly on medications, oils and other procedures which give only temporary results.
After hair transplant surgery, some patients notice hair loss, which is temporary. It is the loss of transplanted hair, along with hair surrounding it. It is a reversible phase and all the lost hair will regrow along with the transplanted hair. It is due to trauma caused by procedure to the existing follicles. Most commonly seen in females, it may affect both donor and recipient sites.
When the transplanted hair start growing, initially they are colourless and thin. Within 6 months to 1 year they will darken, thicken and will become mature. It is recommended to follow instructions given by your doctor to encourage new hair growth.
In this method about 8-10 follicles are taken from head and processed in the laboratory to separate the stem cells. These stem cells are injected in the bald region. This procedure is expected to grow innumerable amount of hair. Procedure is still under research and results are unpredictable.
These are methods of adding commercial artificial hair to natural hair. In Hair weaving artificial hair are clipped to natural hair whereas in hair bonding they are glued to natural hair. These methods are used to conceal thinning or hair loss in concentrated areas. Both the methods are temporary and time consuming.
Major disadvantage of these is that it damages the natural follicles because of irritation and scalp skin and leads to irreversible bald patches, irritation and itching of skin.
Bio-fibres (artificial hair) are used as a substitute for hair. They don’t grow continuously but provide good cosmetic results in patients who do not have sufficient follicles at the backside of the head. It is also one of the quick fix for baldness for people who do not wish to wait for 6 months to see hair transplant results.
